OKC 1889 FC: Renewed Rivalry in a New League

A year after clinching the NPSL’s Heartland Conference crown and advancing to the South Region semifinals, OKC 1889 FC is embarking on a new adventure in The League for Club’s inaugural season. The Imps will have their work cut out for them, facing a stacked Central Division featuring teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri.

OKC, entering its eighth season, went 4-1-2 a year ago, averaging nearly two goals per match. It was a breakthrough season for the squad, who had finished in second place in the Heartland Conference in 2022 and 2023. However, those years featured a nationally recognized Tulsa Athletic side that is a perennial contender in the US Open Cup.

While the club’s played a pair of friendlies in 2024, the War for I-44 resumes in earnest in 2025 as both teams will duke it out in the Central Division. The A’s Sonny Dalesandro is one of the leading minds behind the formation of The League, and the club, as a result, are one of the founding members along with Kingston Stockade FC, Atlantic City FC, Napa Valley 1839 FC and FC Davis.

Currently, the Imps are 2-1-8 all-time in the War for I-44. The club’ll look for its first win against Tulsa since May 24, 2023, a 1-0 in the Big Little City.

Other challengers include a tough FORO SC team out of Dallas, FC Dallas U23s, Corinthians FC of San Antonio, and FC Wichita.

FORO, Corinthians and Wichita have all made waves against professional sides in the US Open Cup. Most recently, FORO has pulled Cupsets in back to back years – first in a PKs against Austin FC II in 2024 and then in regulation this year against Texoma FC.

To date, a schedule hasn’t been released for Summer 2025.
